A recent episode of the BBC Radio 4 series ‘Made of Stronger Stuff’ discusses serotonin and the complex connections between body and mind.

This episode highlights the importance of serotonin for our basic bodily functions such as mood, appetite, gut function, wound healing, and sleep; looking at the positive impact on our mood, of quality sleep, regular exercise and sufficient daylight.

The discussion also delves into the beneficial effects of SSRI medication on those suffering depressive illnesses, and the suggestion that people with depression tend to focus on negative information and ignore positive information. SSRIs have been shown to shift the mind from this negative mindset toward a more positive one, aiding recovery by helping people to see the good things in life.
